Dealing with a Dry Mouth

While the winter is full of cheer around the holiday season, changes in the weather and cold temperatures come with a lot of dryness. During this time of year, a lot of our Krengel Dental patients come in experiencing dryness in their mouth, especially at night time and changes in the weather. Side effects of a dry mouth include having a sore throat, cracked or chapped lips , bad breath and having a sticky or uncomfortable feeling in your mouth. While mouth dryness can come from a lot of different causes, we are here to guide you on how to take steps towards a solution. Here are three ways to deal with mouth dryness at night.

  • Check in with your dentist and doctor:  Having a dry mouth is a very common side effect to different medications, including antidepressants and antihistamines. If you are on a medication or if you have made any changes to your medications and have noticed a dryer mouth, it is important to address this with your doctor or ask your Krengel dentist if medications could be a factor.
  • Cut back on the alcohol: while the holiday season can be full of parties and celebration, increased alcohol intake can cause  a dry mouth due to decreased saliva production, heightening the risk of tooth decay and cavities. Not only does regular alcohol intake impact saliva production, it can also contribute to bad breath and lead to irritation. Monitor your alcohol intake to celebrate your healthy smile in the long term.
  • Stay hydrated!: The sun may not be out and it may be cold out, however the dry climate takes a toll on your body, making water intake very important for your health during the winter months. Make sure that you are sipping water frequently throughout the day and try to have at least one glass of water before bed. Staying hydrated before going to bed will help beat dryness during the night and your teeth, skin, nails and entire body will be grateful for the hydration.
