Best Treatments for Tooth Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity is a very common issue. In fact, a study in 2013 found that one in eight patients who regularly go to the dentist experience sensitive teeth. However, it is a very treatable condition if there are no other underlying conditions.

Here are some tips to help with overall prevention of tooth sensitivity:

  • Always maintain good oral hygiene and a well balanced oral hygiene routine. Not only will this help with tooth sensitivity, but it will also help your overall dental health.
  • Fluoride can help greatly reduce tooth sensitivity, alongside other desensitizing treatments. There are a wide variety of toothpastes, gels and mouthwashes that contain fluoride that can help this issue. Here is a list of different fluoride based dental products you can use for tooth sensitivity.
  • Use a soft bristled toothbrush while brushing your teeth, this can help prevent  irritation and abrasions.
  • Limit the amount of acidic foods and/or beverages you intake. This helps to prevent the dissolving of your tooth enamel, which helps to protect your teeth.
  • Make sure you’re scheduling regular dental appointments to resolve dental issues, like tooth sensitivity.
  • Use a mouth guard at night if you regularly grind your teeth.

Also, we have some at-home remedy recommendations to help alleviate pain from tooth sensitivity:

  • Salt water rinses: Salt is a known anti-inflammatory and can also be used as an effective antiseptic. For this rinse, you should mix a ½ tsp of salt in a glass of lukewarm water. Swish the rinse around your mouth for thirty seconds before you spit  it out. You can repeat this process up to twice a day.
  • Turmeric is another great anti-inflammatory agent. For tooth sensitivity, you can try massaging ground turmeric on your gums twice a day.
  • Hydrogen peroxide is both a mild antiseptic and disinfectant. For this at home remedy, you’ll want to use two capfuls of three percent hydrogen peroxide to equal parts water. Swish the mixture around in your mouth for about thirty seconds, then spit it out, and finally rinse your mouth out with water. This rinse is especially helpful in  preventing gum inflammation.
  • Green tea has both great antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. You can use unsweetened green tea twice a day as a mouthwash which can help with tooth sensitivity, strengthening teeth, and reducing inflammation
