Is Bonding As Good As Veneers?

Are you considering cosmetic dentistry to rectify a chip or gap in your teeth, or discolored and worn teeth? Luckily, there are several cosmetic dental procedures that can help to create your dream smile. Two of the most common procedures we see for a mouth makeover are dental bonding and dental veneers. Both are great options for giving you the smile you want, so how do you choose? Below we’ve rounded up some advantages and disadvantages of both dental bonding and dental veneers.

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are a great option to improve your smile! Veneers are thin coverings that are placed over the front of your tooth. Veneers can either be made out of resin or porcelain material. Typically, porcelain veneers are made to fit over the entire tooth. They are a great, realistic option to correct a host of dental issues, such as stained teeth, crooked or misshapen teeth and much more.

What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding is when a tooth-colored resin is applied to the tooth and hardened with a special light. Like veneers, dental bonding can be used to fix a number of issues like cracked teeth and gaps.

Which should I choose?

One of the first questions we get asked when a patient is considering cosmetic dental work is whether or not they should opt for veneers or dental bonding. While your dentist will be able to make an educated recommendation based on your unique circumstance, here are a few things to consider:

  • Durability: Dental veneers are made to last, usually lasting 10 to 25 years. While they can still break or crack, porcelain veneers tend to be more durable than dental bonding.
  • Cost: Dental bonding is much cheaper than porcelain veneers, however, it is not as durable. So while your initial cost of a dental bonding procedure may be less than getting veneers, overtime it might end up costing you more.
  • Appearance: Both dental bonding and veneers are made to look like natural teeth. However, veneers are stain resistant and tend to maintain their appearance longer than dental bonding does.
