4 Procedures That Straighten Teeth

Many people suffer from crooked teeth that vary in severity. Sometimes, they are just cosmetic issues that may leave you feeling self-conscious, other times they are a much larger issue and can cause discomfort, bite issues, and much more. No matter the severity, there are a handful of dental procedures that can help with the misalignment.

Your dentist or orthodontist will assess your mouth and determine which procedure option is the best for your unique situation. These treatment options include the following:

Braces

Braces are perhaps one of the most common ways to straighten misaligned teeth. A dentist or orthodontist will assess your smile and determine the length of time braces are needed. Sometimes, all it takes is a few months, other times, for more severe cases, it can take up to a few years. With braces comes regular appointments to ensure teeth are aligning at an appropriate speed, all hardware is in good condition, and more. Be prepared to visit your dentist or orthodontist every six weeks if you proceed this way.

Palate Expander

Sometimes crooked teeth are just the result of a lack of space! In this case, a palate expander might be the right option for you. A palate expander attaches to your teeth and increases the width of your upper jaw. The device is semi-permanent and is normally followed by braces.

Teeth Pulling

If overcrowding is an issue in your mouth, sometimes your dentist may even recommend pulling a couple of teeth to free up some space. This option, however, is the less common of the three and only recommended for severe cases.

Invisalign

Invisalign, which is similar to the plastic trays you’ll see to whiten teeth, is an option similar to braces. In fact, many of our patients prefer this option over braces as the aligners offer more flexibility and are more discreet than braces. Fitted by a dentist, these aligners gradually move your teeth over time.
