Dental Habits to Start in the New Year

We are a few days into the new year and we are sure many of you are already well into your New Year’s Resolutions. You may be resolving to shed some of the quarantine weight, save more money, or just be healthier overall. While many people resolve to be healthier in some capacity in the new year, many neglect to consider upping their oral health!

Resolving to improve your oral health isn’t a standalone resolution either — many of the actions you take to improve your dental hygiene can also improve your overall health too! Here are a few ways to conquer both in 2021.

Eat more fruits and veggies

Poor nutrition can affect more than just your health and your waistline — it can affect your oral health as well! Because poor nutrition can impact your immune system, it leaves you much more susceptible to common oral disorders, such as periodontal disease. The antioxidants found in fresh fruits and vegetables help improve your body’s ability to fight infection which helps protect your mouth in the long run. Plus, crunchy produce can even help clean your teeth and gums!

Brush and floss your teeth twice a day

You’ve heard us say this a million times but we’re going to remind you once again. Getting into the routine of brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day is the best way to improve your oral health! Doing so protects your teeth from decay and gum disease, both which are typically caused by plaque. Without doing so, you’re more likely to develop tooth decay and gum disease. Check out our recent blog post to learn how both can impact your overall health.

Quit smoking and/or using tobacco

Using tobacco products can affect your mouth in a myriad of ways, including tooth discoloration, gum recession, cavities, throat and oral cancers and so much more. In fact, smokers are twice as likely to lose their teeth than non-smokers are. However, the good news is that these risks decrease once you quit using.

See your dentist regularly

By visiting your dentist twice a year, you are actively working to prevent any dental health issues before they cause discomfort or require more comprehensive treatment. Your dentist will be able to monitor your oral health and help you build a customized dental health regimen.
