Keep the Kids Smiling: Ways to get your kids excited about the dentist

At Krengel Dental, a special part of our practice is working with kids. Not only do we know the importance of caring for a child?s teeth from the time they start showing teeth (usually around their first birthday), but we make it a priority to give our kids a positive experience that keeps them coming back with a smile on.  Here are three of our tips on how to get your kids excited about coming to Krengel Dental:

1. Start with a friendly ?get acquainted visit?

At Krengel Dental, we highly encourage patients to take advantage of the acquaintance visit we offer. During this visit, we will show your child around the office and let them get comfortable before doing an examination with one of our friendly dentists. During this visit, our dentist will count your child?s teeth before discussing brushing and talking about the importance of oral health. This visit allows your child to build rapport with their friendly dentist and ease into dental care so that they are looking forward to their next experience.

2. Lead by example!

?Monkey see, monkey do? is something we notice at Krengel Dentist among our adult and child patients. As a parent, by investing in your teeth and coming to the dentist regularly, showing your child that your dentist is a good friend that helps you maintain strong, healthy teeth, your child will be able to attend their own appointment with more ease, oftentimes feeling special that they get to be like you! Even being excited on the ride over to the dentist and making it enjoyable can make a big impact on your child?s attitude towards the visit.

3. Reward good behavior!

Before a trip to the dentist, you can make a star chart for your child for each day or week that they brush and floss to bring in to their appointment. Even if your child experiences some discomfort at the actual appointment, focusing on congratulating their behavior leading up to the appointment and rewarding them afterwards for attending the appointment can make all the difference in getting them to keep up with healthy dental hygiene! Some possible rewards include partaking in a fun activity after the dentist or getting a toy, book or healthy treat afterwards.

If you are still feeling unsure about how to help your kids get into the dentist?s chair, we are here for you! The good news is that our Krengel Dental team has many more tricks and tools to get the kids in the office and coming back. Looking for more tips or to schedule your child?s appointment?
