Make the Most of Your Electric Toothbrush

An electric toothbrush is known to be most effective in cleaning your teeth, but at Krengel Dental, we remind all of our patients that no matter what toothbrush, your technique is what makes the difference. When opting for an electric toothbrush, there are some common brushing technique mistakes that can keep your effort from reaping the benefits. Here are three tips on how you can guarantee you are getting the most out of your electric toothbrush.

  • Take the full two minutes. Oftentimes, we notice that our patients who have more plaque build up are not brushing for long enough. While it might seem like electric toothbrushes are fast enough to get the job done faster, this is not true about the time you need to brush. Most electric toothbrushes have a timer setting, so make sure you?re using your timer (or setting your own timer) to get those two minutes of teeth brushing in.
  • Quality over quantity. You heard it from your Krengel Dental team here; it is not idea to brush more than 3-4 times a day. Too much brushing can actually hurt your gums and put pressure on tooth enamel. Instead of brushing more than 3 times a day, be mindful of how you brush. Guide the brush without adding too much pressure on your teeth, allowing the bristles to do the heavy-lifting.
  • Take good care of your brush heads. Again, quality says a lot more than quantity when it comes to brushing. If your toothbrush head is older than three months, chances are it needs an effective replacement. Once you notice any broken or frayed bristles, it?s time to make sure you replace your toothbrush head– otherwise, that brushing isn?t doing much!
