Smiling in the Sun: Tips to Keep Your Mouth Healthy This Summer

It?s summer time! BBQ?s, sunshine, pool time and travel are just a few of the summer buzzwords that make us all scream for summer. While we love the carefree summer feeling, it?s important to continue caring about our dental hygiene, even if school is out and travel is in full swing. Here are four tips to keep your smile happy and healthy this summer.

1. Keep a travel dental kit handy

Summer can keep us staying out late, traveling for several days and living in spontaneity! The last thing we want is for spontaneous plans to keep your smile from sparking this summer. Get a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste and floss kit for yourself, your kids, your spouse, etc., so that keeping up with your dental hygiene can be easy. The next time one of your kids asks to stay and sleepover, you can feel good about setting them up to keep those pearly whites happy.

2. Schedule your cleanings

While it may not be the kids? favorite part of summer, days off from school are an excellent time to get that 6 month cleaning in and keep your dental health in check. The best way to start travel on the right note, prepare for camp or just cross some to-dos off the list is to utilize summer for that important check up. 3. Pack healthy snacks

Whether at a baseball game, pool party, camping trip or social gathering, we all look forward to summertime snacks , especially when in the hot sun. We often hear patients say they end up chewing on ice or eating ice cream to no end during the summer time which can lead to a not so smiley dental outcome. Pack healthy snacks like watermelon, baby carrots, string cheese and apples to munch on during your summertime outings.

4. Take brushing breaks

We all scream for ice cream during the summer! Having the best of summer snacks is not something we want to stay away from, so in order to keep your smile just as smiley after treats high in sugar, such as ice cream, do not forgot to brush! It can be easy to forget to brush when taking a camping trip, spending the day on the beach, or after enjoying a sweet treat. Bringing that travel-sized toothbrush can really help. We advise brushing 30 minutes after a sugary snack and maintaining your dental routine to the best of your abilities.
