To use regular floss or to water floss? That is the question we often get at Krengel Dental when reminding patients to floss and discussing ways to keep your smile the happiest and healthiest we can. Using a form of floss is integral in order to remove the plaque and food particles between your teeth where cavities tend to build up, avoiding gum disease and various other dental complications. So which method to use? The quick answer is that depending on your current oral health, the ?best? method for floss will depend on your individual needs.  However, here are some of the pros and cons to consider when choosing between floss and water floss. 

Pros & Cons of Using Floss:?Don?t forget to floss more? is one of the most frequently used phrases among dentists. There are many different kinds of traditional floss; flavored vs. unflavored, waxed vs. unwaxed, strings vs. pics, etc.

What are the Pros?

  • Affordable
  • Easy to transport
  • Easy to  store
  • Easier to control, as you are the one in charge of the action

What are the Cons?

  • Less thorough
  • Requires more effort to get a deep clean
  • More time consuming
  • Not as effective if dealing with periodontal disease where the gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, creating pockets.

Pros & Cons of Using a Water Flosser:The water flosser works by aiming a very thin and high-pressure stream of water at the gum line and between teeth, removing food particles and plaque.

  • More gentle on gums
  • Research shows reduced gingival bleeding at higher rates than string floss
  • Less time consuming
  • Optimal for patients with dental appliances (braces, implants, retainers, etc.)
  • Easier to handle-  better for patients with poor dexterity

What are the Cons?

  • More expensive
  • Difficult to transport (making it difficult to use when away from home)
  • Takes up more storage
  • Requires electricity and water
