Do you have a gap in your teeth or bite alignment issues? Today we’re discussing Invisalign pros and cons so you can make an informed decision about whether Invisalign or braces are right for you.
About Invisalign
Invisalign was developed in 1997 after Zia Chishti, a Stanford University graduate, had a negative experience with a metal retainer after wearing traditional braces. He and Kelsey Wirth created clear aligners that had similar effects as metal braces.
The pair released what we now call Invisalign to the market in 1999 and these aligners have grown tremendously in popularity since.
Invisalign Pros and Cons
The Pros of Invisalign
Using Invisalign to straighten your teeth has many benefits that people love. Here are a few reasons why some of our patients choose to wear them to correct their teeth rather than traditional braces.
Nearly Invisible
Many of our patients report that they love how discreet these clear aligners are. Unlike traditional braces, many people may not even realize that you’re wearing Invisalign.
Removable
Invisalign are removable so you can take them out when brushing your teeth, eating, or drinking. This makes it easier for you to practice good dental hygiene.
More Comfortable Than Traditional Braces
Traditional braces are made of metal and many patients report that they can irritate your gums, lips, or cheeks. Invisalign are clear, smooth, plastic aligners that should not irritate your mouth.
Fewer Check-Ups
Invisalign typically requires fewer office visits than traditional braces. This can save you time and be more convenient.
Less Risk of Staining Your Teeth
With braces, you risk tooth discoloration and plaque buildup because you can’t remove them to clean your teeth properly.
You Can Customize Your Treatment
Invisalign are custom-made for you! We create custom treatment plans for each of our patients.
Cons of Invisalign
Although there are many pros to using Invisalign to correct a bite, close teeth gaps, or straighten teeth, there are some instances where it may make more sense to go with traditional braces. Here are a few cons of using Invisalign.
Invisalign Must Be Worn 20-22 Hours a Day to Be Effective
Discipline is needed when pursuing an Invisalign treatment. If you don’t wear them enough, it can slow down or delay treatment.
May Not Work for Complex Treatments
If you suffer from severe bite issues, large gaps, or overcrowding, braces may be required to treat these issues.
Higher Cost Than Braces
Invisalign typically costs more than traditional braces.
They Need to Be Removed When Eating or Drinking
If you forget to remove your Invisalign while eating or drinking, it could stain or break the aligners.
You May Misplace Them
Some people report losing their Invisalign after temporarily taking them out. This can lead to additional costs or may extend the time needed for treatment.
Speech Changes
Some patients report having a slight lisp when they start wearing Invisalign, but this usually goes away over time.
Initial Discomfort
Like traditional braces, Invisalign may be uncomfortable in the beginning of your treatment. However, this discomfort should fade over time.
