Is it time to replace your toothbrush?
We all know that brushing your teeth twice a day is important for a healthy smile. But if your toothbrush is old, it won’t be as effective as a line of defense against plaque and bacteria. Here’s how to know when it’s time to replace your toothbrush.
4 Signs You Need to Replace Your Toothbrush
It’s Been 3 or More Months Since Your Last Replacement
According to the American Dental Association, everyone should be replacing their toothbrush or toothbrush head (if using an electric toothbrush) every 3 to 4 months. If the bristles of your brush are frayed sooner than that, you might want to replace it on a faster schedule. After three months has passed, the bristles on your brush are less effective at removing plaque and could even damage your teeth and gums.
You Were Sick
If you’ve been sick recently with bugs like the flu, cold, or strep throat, it’s a good time to replace your toothbrush so you don’t reinfect yourself with the same illness or something worse.
The Bristles Look Frayed or Flattened
When your bristles look flattened to one side or frayed, they won’t clean your teeth properly and can even irritate your gums and teeth. When this happens, it’s time for a new brush.
Bad Odor
If your toothbrush smells bad or is showing signs of mold, rust, or mildew around the handle or base of the brush, it’s time to replace it. You you don’t want to make yourself sick!
How to Make Your Toothbrush Last Longer
In order to make your toothbrush last as long as possible, it’s important to do what you can to keep it free of bacteria. That means storing it upright so it can air dry, not keeping it a closed container, and rinsing it well after brushing.
Another thing you can can try, especially if you have an electric toothbrush, is to clean it. All you’ll need for this is a cup of warm water and a teaspoon of baking soda mixed together. After dissolving the baking soda in the warm water, you’ll let your toothbrush soak, head-down, for 15 to 30 minutes. After soaking, rinse it in warm water and let it air dry!
