At Krengel Dental, we recognize the importance of oral cancer screenings as part of preventative healthcare. Here’s everything you need to know about what happens during oral cancer screenings and what it is that we look for.
What is Oral Cancer?
Oral Cancer includes cancers of the mouth, throat, lips, and tongue. According to the American Cancer Society, about 59,000 Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer each year.
Who is Most Likely to Be Diagnosed with Oral Cancer?
The average age of someone diagnosed with oral cancer is 64, but it can still occur at earlier ages. The American Cancer Society says that about 20% of cases occur in people younger than 55. Oral cancer is equally common among men and women.
Some people have a higher risk of oral cancer, including those who use tobacco regularly, drink heavy amounts of alcohol, and have a previous oral cancer diagnosis. A history of significant sun exposure can also increase your risk for lip cancer.
What Happens During Oral Cancer Screenings?
Whether you’ve known it or not, we always check for signs of oral cancer at the start of a regular dental checkup with us. During this screening, we typically look for any abnormalities such as lumps, ulcers, or lesions in your mouth, lips, tongue, cheeks, and throat. That being said, if you notice any of these symptoms at home, please make sure you ask us to look at the issue during your next exam with us.
Why Do You Do Oral Cancer Screenings?
The earlier we catch precancerous or cancerous conditions in your mouth, the easier the cancer will be able to treat. Our goal is to always find signs of cancer as early as possible.
