While the winter months are finally behind us, many are still suffering from lingering colds or sinus infections. And as we head into the summer months, health is a priority for many to ensure they can enjoy the warm weather and fun the season has to offer. Below we’ve rounded up some of the ways you can keep your mouth healthy and prevent the spread of germs all year long.
How to Take Care of Teeth When Sick
Here are a few tips on how to take care of teeth when sick so that you recover fast and still maintain good oral health.
Maintain Good Oral Hygiene
We get it – when you’re sick, all you want to do is lay in bed and binge watch your favorite Netflix show. However, maintaining proper oral hygiene during this time is crucial! A good oral hygiene routine consists of:
- Brushing twice daily
- Flossing at least once a day
- Using a high-quality mouthwash once a day
Maintaining proper oral hygiene while sick will help eliminate some of the bacteria from your mouth and prevent further sickness or tooth problems.
Change Out Your Toothbrush
Normally, we recommend switching out your toothbrush every three months or so. However, we always recommend you change out your toothbrush after recovering from an illness to prevent contamination. Equally, if someone in your house is sick, we recommend they use a separate toothpaste, such as a travel-sized tube, to prevent contamination.
Stay hydrated
When you’re sick, it is normal for your body to become dehydrated. This can happen for many reasons, whether it’s because you’ve been vomiting or running a fever. Whatever the cause may be, it’s important to keep your mouth hydrated not only to keep your body functioning but to prevent dry mouth. Dry mouth is a condition caused by a decrease in saliva production. Not only is dry mouth uncomfortable, but it can cause cavities if not treated.
