How to take care of your gums

When it comes to your mouth’s health, it’s not just about how white or straight your teeth are! One of the best ways to support a healthy mouth is to take care of your gums. Even people with the pearliest whites and perfect teeth aren’t safe from gum disease. And since gum disease can be painless for most people, some can go months before realizing anything is wrong.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease begins when plaque starts building up under and along the gum line. Over time, this bacteria-filled substance can cause infections and hurt the gum bone eventually leading to tooth decay and even tooth loss. There are stages of gum disease, gingivitis, which can cause your gums to become red, inflamed and even bleed, is the first stage. And over time, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease that affects bone. According to the American Dental Association, signs you may have gum disease include:

  • Bad smell or taste coming from mouth
  • Separating or loose teeth
  • Gums that easily bleed
  • Swollen, red, tender gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from teeth

Fortunately, gum disease is reversible and preventable! Here are some steps you can take to protect your gums.
