Best Toothpaste for Kids

Children’s toothpaste should be introduced into your child’s dental care routine starting at two years of age. With all of the children’s toothpaste options available, we know it can be pretty intimidating to know which one is the best option for your child. The good news is that there are just a few requirements to keep in mind to ensure you are selecting the best option for your child.

Dental hygiene is just as important as other elements of your child’s health. Keep reading to discover what makes a quality children’s toothpaste.

Fluoride vs No-Fluoride

One of the biggest debates parents face when selecting a toothpaste for their child is whether or not they should use one that has added fluoride. For children under two years of age, or children who have trouble spitting out their toothpaste, we recommend selecting a fluoride-free toothpaste. While ingesting small amounts of fluoride is harmless, it is better to be safe than sorry. For older children, selecting a toothpaste that has fluoride will help strengthen your child’s teeth and prevent cavities.

Which brand to choose?

When it comes to selecting a brand, it’s all about preference! We just recommend selecting a simple toothpaste (no added whitening, charcoal, or anything else) for your child, and one that is approved by the American Dental Association. There should be a label on the box that tells you whether or not it has been approved by the ADA.

Does flavor matter?

Flavor matters when it comes to building lifelong habits for your child! Keep your child’s likes and dislikes in mind. If your child has a sweet tooth, perhaps they’d prefer a flavor like bubblegum or watermelon. Or, maybe they prefer something simple like mint. Making sure the toothpaste is a flavor they enjoy will make the whole toothbrushing process a lot more enjoyable and help them build those lifelong habits.
