Does Oil Pulling Have Oral Health Benefits?

Did you know your oral health can impact your physical health as well? There’s no better reason to keep your mouth sparkly and healthy. In an effort to promote oral health, many people are turning to less-traditional methods to preserve their teeth. One of these popular methods? Oil pulling! Continue reading to examine the benefits of this ancient method.

What is Oil Pulling?

On an empty stomach, typically first thing in the morning, a tablespoon of oil is swished around the mouth for at least 60 seconds to upwards of 20 minutes. The oil is pulled through the teeth and around the mouth until it becomes thinner and milky white. Then it is spat out and followed by a water rinse and subsequent brushing.

What Oils can be Used for Pulling?

Recommended oils include coconut, sunflower, olive, sesame, and palm.

What are the Benefits of Oil Pulling?

Many claims have been made as to the benefits of oil pulling. It is said to pull toxins out of the mouth and serve as a remedy to a range of oral health problems including periodontitis, halitosis, and gingivitis. Many individuals have also found that this practice prevents dry throat and cracked lips.

No harmful side effects of oil pulling are known. However, soreness in the face and jaw muscles may be felt with overuse. We recommend swishing for less time and lowering the frequency of use as needed.

Oil pulling should not be used to replace brushing and flossing. Continue to practice proper oral hygiene through a combination of pulling, brushing, and flossing.
