Common Dental Tools

Going to the dentist’s office can be intimidating for children and adults alike. Especially when you’re surrounded by equipment you’re unfamiliar with! However, there is nothing to fear as all of the dental equipment within the dental office is designed to help you maintain, clean, and protect your pearly whites. Here are three pieces of equipment you’ll commonly find at a dentist’s office for cleaning.

Saliva Ejector

Perhaps the least intimidating and the one most people are familiar with is the saliva ejector. This handy tool grabs hold of saliva from your gums, cheeks, tongue, and teeth and sucks it up through the tube. This just allows your dentist to get a clear look at your mouth without a bucket of saliva in the way.

Scaler

One of the most important tools for cleaning, the scaler scrapes at the plaque and tartar on your teeth and gums. This is perhaps one of the most intimidating tools for patients due to the sharp hook and sound it makes. However, have no fear. Despite its hook, there shouldn’t be much pain if you properly maintain your oral hygiene as your dentist won’t have to use the scaler much during your appointment.

Isolite

The isolite not only helps you to open your mouth wider, but it also helps your dentist see everything they’re doing inside your mouth. Without an isolite, we’d constantly be asking patients to open their mouths wider and need a flashlight to see inside of your mouth.

Were you familiar with any of these tools from your last dentist appointment? If not, hopefully you can now identify them at your next!
