How to Keep Your Gums Healthy

By now, you all probably know that good oral hygiene is one of the best ways to prevent and treat gum disease. However, most people tend to overlook their gums when considering their overall oral health, focusing instead on their pearly whites. However, healthy teeth need healthy gums!

How to Keep Your Gums HealthyHere are some ways you can keep your gums happy and healthy to prevent tooth loss and dental disease.

Brush your teeth properly

Here are the guidelines the American Dental Association recommends people follow for proper teeth brushing:

  • Brush at least twice a day with a soft bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste
  • Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months or once the bristles begin fraying
  • Move the toothbrush in short strokes
  • Brush the teeth at a 45-degree angle to the gums
  • Press gently

Remember — brushing your teeth properly is the key to a healthy mouth and gums!

Use the right toothpaste

If you’ve ever visited the toothpaste aisle of your local convenience store and been totally overwhelmed by all of the options available, don’t worry — you’re not alone. When it comes to picking out a toothpaste, just be sure that it has fluoride and the American Dental Association seal of approval on the packaging.

Quit smoking

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking can make a person more susceptible to gum disease as it weakens the immune system. The CDC recommends quitting smoking to immediately help reduce your risk of developing gum disease or other health problems.

Use mouthwash

Utilizing a therapeutic mouthwash daily can help:

  • Prevent gum disease
  • Reduce speed of tartar buildup
  • Reduce plaque buildup
  • Remove food particles from teeth

However, the ADA does not recommend that children under 6 use mouthwash.
